"Let me give you a new command: Love one another. In the same way I loved you, you love one another. This is how everyone will recognize that you are my disciples when they see the love you have for each other."
John 13:33-35

Steve Latham

In 1995 two middle aged men met at a Sunday School class in Stanley Kansas.  Steve Latham had been raised a missionary kid in the Philippines and Gordon Blackie had just read books about missions. Both had a dream to get actively involved in missions and to encourage others to get involved in short term missions.

On Thanksgiving break of that year Gordon sat down for the first time to play with a new toy that was just becoming popular called the internet. He did a search for “mission aviation”.

A number of groups were e-mailed and an invitation to help transport supplies to missionaries in Haiti was received from Dr. Rob Helmer of Missionair in Jacksonville, FL.  The flight was to leave on December 16 and return in time for Christmas. Steve worked for UPS and could not get the time off that close to Christmas.  Gordon made plans to go alone hoping to make some contacts and learn more about the whole process.

But God had other plans! For reasons long since forgotten, the trip was postponed until mid January.  Steve had no trouble getting time off after the Christmas shipping rush had past.  Both men were able to make the trip and returned feeling the call to do more.

We arrived in Jacksonville in time to help make final maintenance on Missionair’s DC 3.

Then spent a long day loading a great variety of stuff including hospital supplies, a motorcycle, a deep freeze, several air conditioners, office supplies, copying machine parts, truck tires, etc, etc, etc.

Thankful for our safe arrival in Port-au-Prince we began with prayer

Our group was made up of a strange mix of Baptists, Methodists, Nazarenes, Pentecostals, and Catholics.

No one seemed to care about differences. We were there to share the love of Christ!
